What you’ll actually use (and love) after baby arrives.

You’ve spent months prepping for baby — the onesies are washed, the car seat is installed, and the nursery is finally done. But what about you?
Too often, we forget to prepare for the major recovery and transition that comes after birth. Whether it’s your first baby or your fifth, the postpartum period is full of changes, emotions, and physical healing. Having a few thoughtful items on hand can make a huge difference in your comfort, recovery, and ability to care for your baby.
Here are some of my top must-haves for those first few weeks and months after giving birth:
1. A Supportive Sports Bra
Your body is going through a lot of changes — including your chest! A high-quality, supportive sports bra can help with comfort and stabilization as your milk comes in. I love the options from Athleta, especially because they list cup sizes, making it easier to find the right fit. For nursing-friendly options, brands like Senita have great choices with built-in access for breastfeeding.
2. A Sling or Wrap for Baby
There’s something magical about carrying your baby close. A sling or wrap makes it easy to soothe and bond with your newborn while keeping your hands free. Whether you’re walking around the house or out running a quick errand, babywearing is both practical and cozy.
3. Extra Hospital Underwear
Don’t leave the hospital without grabbing a few pairs of those mesh undies. They’re incredibly light, breathable, and perfect for the healing process in those first couple of weeks. Trust me — you’ll be glad you brought them home.
4. Nipple Cream
Breastfeeding can be a beautiful bonding experience — but it can also be a bit painful in the beginning. A good nipple cream is a must. Look for something soothing and safe for baby (lanolin is a popular choice), and use it frequently, especially in those early days.
5. Everything Cozy
Now is not the time to squeeze into your pre-pregnancy jeans. Give yourself permission to live in soft, stretchy, comfy clothes for as long as you need. Think: joggers, leggings, oversized sweaters, and anything with an elastic waistband. Comfort is key while your body recovers.
6. Heat Packs
Reusable rice or flax heat packs are amazing for when your milk comes in or if you’re dealing with engorgement. Pop them in the microwave and place on your chest to encourage letdown, soothe discomfort, or just relax those sore muscles from all the feeding and carrying.
7. A Nursing Sleep Bra + Nursing Pads
Leaking happens — especially at night. A soft nursing bra to sleep in, plus a good set of absorbent pads, will keep you dry and help prevent clogged ducts or irritation.
8. Loose Tanks + Comfy Leggings for Walks
Once you feel up for light movement (even just walking around the block), loose-fitting tanks and leggings will be your go-to outfit. The goal? Clothes that are breathable, move with you, and feel good while supporting your recovery.
9. Witch Hazel Pads
Postpartum healing can be a bit, well… intense. Witch hazel pads are gentle on your perineal area and can help reduce swelling and prevent infection. Keep them in the fridge for extra relief.
10. Perineal Cooling Pads or Ice Maxi Pads
Those first few days are no joke. Cooling pad liners or ice pack pads provide much-needed relief down there. Having a stash at home means you’ll be able to stay more comfortable between bathroom trips and feeding sessions.
11. The Wilma App
We may be biased, but The Wilma App is truly a must-have for postpartum moms. Designed specifically for women — and especially moms — Wilma gently guides you through safe recovery, pelvic floor work, and easing back into movement. Whether you’re walking, stretching, or starting to build strength again, the app helps you reconnect with your body and rebuild at your own pace. Recovery isn’t linear, but with the right tools, it can feel supported.
No matter how you delivered, postpartum recovery is real. Your job now isn’t just caring for your new baby — it’s caring for yourself, too. These simple items can help support your body, ease discomfort, and give you the tools to rest and heal.
Mamas, you’ve got this. And if there’s anything you swore by in the postpartum period, drop it in the comments
